Situation
Brent Brown, owner of the Brent Brown Auto Group in Provo, Utah, came to Little Giant Ladder Systems with a great idea—he wanted to give a new Little Giant Ladder to every customer who bough a new or used truck. Brent explained that automotive dealers like him are always looking for effective promotions to boost sales. The problem with most promotions is that they customers often refuse them and ask for their cash value to be subtracted from their sales price. The ideal promotion brings customers to the lot and goes home with them. Knowing this, the business development team at Little Giant Ladder Systems approached Brent Brown Auto Group based in Provo, Utah, with an idea.
Solution
Brent Brown Auto Group and Little Giant Ladder Systems teamed up for a special summer promotion, Brent Brown Truck Summer. During the months of June, July, and August of 2007 and 2008, Brent Brown Auto Group planned to aggressively advertise a special truck sales promotion on TV, radio, and print media. During the three-month promotion, Brent Brown would give away a custom-labeled Little Giant Classic multi-use ladder with every new or used truck purchase.
Result
Brent Brown called the Little Giant Ladder Systems / Brent Brown Truck Summer promotion the best promotion he had ever run. At the end of three months in 2007, Brent Brown had given away nearly 500 ladders at his Toyota, Chevy, and Dodge stores. These results nearly tripled the automotive group’s projections. And more importantly, almost no one refused the Little Giant Classic in favor of cash value. The Little Giant brand brought customers to the lot, and it went home with them.
In 2008, the promotion was a big success, even though it ran right in the middle of the worst gas price crisis the nation has ever seen. The promotion was such a success that Brent Brown and Little Giant Solutions have agreed to make it yearly tradition. Watch for Brent Brown Truck Summer 2009 in June 2009. Now the word is beginning to spread, and dealerships in other major markets in the U.S. have approached Little Giant Solutions for a similar partnership.
Situation
American Express Membership Rewards is one of the largest, most exclusive credit card rewards and loyalty programs in the world. AMEX chooses only the best high-end products for its members, so getting a product listed in the AMEX online catalog can be difficult, but American Express recognized the potential of pairing up the American Express and Little Giant brands. Getting listed in the quarterly print catalog is reserved for only the hottest, best-selling brands.
Solution
The first response was somewhat skeptical. Home improvement products had never really been a major factor in the AMEX Membership Rewards program. Conventional wisdom said that popular, aspirational products like high-end electronics, housewares, and sporting goods were the real performers. Little Giant was thrilled when American Express agreed to a trial limited release of several of our best-selling products.
Results
Sales have been so high and so consistent that Little Giant products are now a regular fixture in American Express’s exclusive quarterly Membership Rewards catalog. Buyers for American Express have added several more product lines to the AMEX Web site and are stunned by the response. They now use the success of Little Giant ladders on AMEX to show that conventional wisdom doesn’t always apply when you have a strong brand and a desirable, high-quality product. Everyone (from bankers to builders) wants and can use a Little Giant ladder.
